textile art, “Lifeblood”, has been invited to Art Quilt Elements 2024 in Wayne,
Pennsylvania. This 16th biennial exhibit presents contemporary fine
art quilts, drawing entrants from around the world. Three jurors</span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">
reviewed over 800 images, by applicants from 40 US states and 10 countries,
choosing 50 artists. The jurors feel the exhibit serves “as an accurate survey
of what fiber artists are currently producing in this field.”</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Working in her studio in New Maryland, New Brunswick, this
is Lee’s first international exhibit. She feels humbled, excited, validated,
and intimidated all at once. Information about the show, which runs from March
24 to April 27, 2024, can be found at <span class="MsoHyperlink"><a href="https://artquiltelements.org/">artquiltelements.org</a></span>. </span><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu2Ac3BjICqBStD8_IEpXNuROQWa9unocTFi35PF9828Utk-SrVLhkZSa-6KvDSk3_bo-o2yk46W4aQel6j9wOKIqZcMT3uPFOZvP2BBGtnegzSDBaDpnZCIhQMAHD3l8pTHXWjZh-0LahumGJPTJNPZ82kR03XHx1fW-iyrg2nCp4q2Zdo3UTkou5_gCM/s4105/lifeblood.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3423" data-original-width="4105" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu2Ac3BjICqBStD8_IEpXNuROQWa9unocTFi35PF9828Utk-SrVLhkZSa-6KvDSk3_bo-o2yk46W4aQel6j9wOKIqZcMT3uPFOZvP2BBGtnegzSDBaDpnZCIhQMAHD3l8pTHXWjZh-0LahumGJPTJNPZ82kR03XHx1fW-iyrg2nCp4q2Zdo3UTkou5_gCM/s320/lifeblood.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ansi-language: #2000; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Lifeblood, 34" x 41", 2023</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><p></p>SAQA - Atlantic Canadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10351585638184657598noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8173496978548316136.post-35981844714636883692024-02-08T17:10:00.000-04:002024-02-08T17:10:07.124-04:00Invasive - Call for Entry<p> <span style="color: #26282a; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Invasive</span></p>

is it to be invasive? What comes to mind? For some it may be invasive species,
for others it may be invasive illness or medical procedures, and for still
others it may be intrusion on personal space (be it another person in our physical
space or unwanted thoughts in our own head). Whatever comes to mind, something
invasive tends to be aggressive and takes over where they are not welcome or
cause harm. Invasive seeks to explore the meaning behind the concept; how do we
come to terms with something invasive; can we transform something invasive? If
so, how? </span><span style="color: #26282a;"><o:p></o:p></span></p>

She sketched the
leaf prints over top of the pics, moved the sketch around until she liked it and created a series.</span></div><div>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Then she </span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">executed those ideas on the fabric. She used a photocopier to print the images onto fabric. She traced leaf prints and transferred and placed them onto the fabric. She stabilized the fabric (no batting) and stitched with
free-motion the outline shape in her design. Then she stitched another leaf
shape over top of the shear fabric and cut away the excess. She also added hand embroidery.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj3T_ye5NTqDoRkNfTpnF_Ik1jjM_9I6_KYT0j1lF_Aygn1uCupJKuQ75ToZKRG4YlAeyTXHXvxdgMa5C33h8Q_jsm3CNK5IwAYgNfJvGiLBceK3BwU9L0rtFcyCDV1sRE3Z7c38NhAe8dw1ONrdISIWT2jyto3NmaO7ckV-Tvv8sW-DH4VUQF33yEsD9Jg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="413" data-original-width="402" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj3T_ye5NTqDoRkNfTpnF_Ik1jjM_9I6_KYT0j1lF_Aygn1uCupJKuQ75ToZKRG4YlAeyTXHXvxdgMa5C33h8Q_jsm3CNK5IwAYgNfJvGiLBceK3BwU9L0rtFcyCDV1sRE3Z7c38NhAe8dw1ONrdISIWT2jyto3NmaO7ckV-Tvv8sW-DH4VUQF33yEsD9Jg" width="234" /></a> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEghvC7O5MglGtNi2RQCzQR_k7gRqIa9ZecQPeYf0gr0YGop16jQzosPQHwNpD_INWEpA8hJGUDv3UqeYLFYVtwOHPyeLiITzZyzliynFL0GQz6LkqcE3uZQyN9yhdXqg6vK_fD2k7qKy3pixFTKGE-J74T2M6Obqy_RuRgbafF3yVGR-CjGmMQJkdSHf-7b" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="413" data-original-width="407" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEghvC7O5MglGtNi2RQCzQR_k7gRqIa9ZecQPeYf0gr0YGop16jQzosPQHwNpD_INWEpA8hJGUDv3UqeYLFYVtwOHPyeLiITzZyzliynFL0GQz6LkqcE3uZQyN9yhdXqg6vK_fD2k7qKy3pixFTKGE-J74T2M6Obqy_RuRgbafF3yVGR-CjGmMQJkdSHf-7b" width="237" /></a></div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi9M8LCvMeTrmxbphxXTu9G3enkMxew3YecnRkWnn_2CrBlVgXqyG1va2MzQvyepN7IZJ8vfiUYvA8bqRFzH1n-EiEqdO5nRjITSAR7QlVa5IU5mC_NVh5UDENj_Ilu6u56C4lPFhUEWC1hHfjmn0skxeWDBBLnI4B6QcK4SslZV679vgiQt22ZhmnaIhpl" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="496" data-original-width="640" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi9M8LCvMeTrmxbphxXTu9G3enkMxew3YecnRkWnn_2CrBlVgXqyG1va2MzQvyepN7IZJ8vfiUYvA8bqRFzH1n-EiEqdO5nRjITSAR7QlVa5IU5mC_NVh5UDENj_Ilu6u56C4lPFhUEWC1hHfjmn0skxeWDBBLnI4B6QcK4SslZV679vgiQt22ZhmnaIhpl" width="310" /></a> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhhi2GzkqR-L6BD5X1Z8w59LGUXkQCkMnKc7bTEIAfqaYt3Vvo1MBnGR6asA8g9lC5U6Et0bML0RrQwIijOWxnngZP_oAiwZ48qar_tkpNU9592kLtq6ocahE-aVxGYVYfQqAXgP2MlbexFJG-VqCM4ZKERJTw_ok5wDwGasRvVY6Mrf5RUEABhHGPEts1_" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="496" data-original-width="640" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhhi2GzkqR-L6BD5X1Z8w59LGUXkQCkMnKc7bTEIAfqaYt3Vvo1MBnGR6asA8g9lC5U6Et0bML0RrQwIijOWxnngZP_oAiwZ48qar_tkpNU9592kLtq6ocahE-aVxGYVYfQqAXgP2MlbexFJG-VqCM4ZKERJTw_ok5wDwGasRvVY6Mrf5RUEABhHGPEts1_=w279-h240" width="279" /></a></div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica; text-align: left;">In order for the finished to work to sit inside the frame she cut a window size out of paper and laid it over the stitched pieces to find the best layout, cut and secured the edges with a thin zig zag stitch. notified by Martha Sielman that she had chosen one of my pieces<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Bank Machine Blues,<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>for her book on birds. It has taken over two
years for her to put this book together and have it published by Schiffer publishing
but it is a beautiful book entitled Stitched Journeys with Birds.</span></span></p><p class="Body"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">You were allowed to submit 3 pieces for
consideration.</span></p>
<p class="Body"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Bank Machine Blues was created for the 2005
Grand National Quilt Exhibition with the theme: Airborne. I painted my background
fabric and used free motion embroidery on warm and natural quilt</span><span style="font-family: helvetica;"> </span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">batt to make the loons.</span><span style="font-family: helvetica;"> </span><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I attached the loons so that they were 3-d.
My inspiration was the $20 bill that was in circulation at the time but I
wanted it in colour rather than the drab green that it was. I used my family
initials and order of birth for the serial numbers. In my artist statement I
said that you go to the bank Machine, take out $20 bills and they become
airborne and fly away. The section above the $20 bill represents those that got
away.</span></p>SAQA - Atlantic Canadahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10351585638184657598noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8173496978548316136.post-76243154223630828532023-10-06T14:12:00.003-03:002023-10-23T09:04:46.185-03:00SAQA Annual Retreat<p><b><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: large;"> SAQA Atlantic Annual Retreat</span></b></p><p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Members of SAQA Atlantic met at the beautiful Maple Inn in Parrsboro, NS Sep 29 - Oct 1, 2023. If I need a small piece of fabric I’ll use my unsewn scraps next and only go to my yardage if I need a big chunk.</span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span>I bag the tiniest scraps for a friend to make dog beds or for garden mulch - nothing wasted!</span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">I only keep a few spools of thread (Superior) which are organized on a rack on the wall. My philosophy is if I don’t use something for a year, it is donated, gifted or recycled. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large; line-height: 115%;"><b>Aside from the emptiness, which is
rather unusual for a quilter, are there other unique features?</b></span></i></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large; line-height: 115%;">One unusual
aspect is that my husband does all my quilting on his
long arm machine. He has his own space at the other end of the house so when I
have a top ready for him to quilt, I just walk downstairs and hand it over to
him. I am more than blessed with this arrangement!<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large; line-height: 115%;">Another great
aspect of my studio is that I can easily take it on the road – literally! </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large; line-height: 115%;">Every
summer for the past couple of decades, my husband and I hop into the RV and
head to Cape Breton where we spend several weeks at Broad Cove campground. I
use the same portable sew easy table that I use in my home studio and bring the
five small baskets of fabric scraps that I use daily. Since
I’m a minimalist it’s easy to schlep my tools back and forth. As I can’t bring
the huge design wall, I work on smaller pieces or I hang a sheet on the
clothesline and just deal with the constant breeze. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large; line-height: 115%;">I can also
dye fabric there which I don’t often do at home. I actually learned to dye from
Anne Schroeder, another Cape Breton artist, several years ago.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi8trwbLHGTZPBpOpBwOjjKCUsZLEGJ4j5u7JmUxpfS7Qv7swUAP7QnBG0zcExYVHJi1rHRfDNfV4kmogoZYzqkUJV2KBD9HabHSNp_cMy9AmL9iJL8D-zECdcavOTjTAiN58cJ5E1bW-HjUDAORgX7ZOcC_IxUk9nTGyHcVlXwZBkpM-5PcZpdn8lcrA=s1672" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1672" data-original-width="1254" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi8trwbLHGTZPBpOpBwOjjKCUsZLEGJ4j5u7JmUxpfS7Qv7swUAP7QnBG0zcExYVHJi1rHRfDNfV4kmogoZYzqkUJV2KBD9HabHSNp_cMy9AmL9iJL8D-zECdcavOTjTAiN58cJ5E1bW-HjUDAORgX7ZOcC_IxUk9nTGyHcVlXwZBkpM-5PcZpdn8lcrA=w240-h320" width="240" /></span></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">Susan's portable studio</span><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">...</span></i></td></tr></tbody></table><div><i><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><b>Does it make a difference if you are in open or cluttered space?</b></span></i></div><div><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><i><br /></i></span><div><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh5cpE2h0w5_fpc7mKdtAfNkUcITPNRmmAMwtLOzQZV8bvK83NGC20PJ1q0InNYKSD3Va9GjyrArU_0-qbCRSP4ClExKFZ6W0oNN4ua_1MDIqNQVHq-iOj5reZ2b049wJalTVybg_yHpTMZir-bpFdXlNu18Vh35uQMoTKfNLyEXEwpoSMX4tQOv9Ao7w=s1672" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1672" data-original-width="1254" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh5cpE2h0w5_fpc7mKdtAfNkUcITPNRmmAMwtLOzQZV8bvK83NGC20PJ1q0InNYKSD3Va9GjyrArU_0-qbCRSP4ClExKFZ6W0oNN4ua_1MDIqNQVHq-iOj5reZ2b049wJalTVybg_yHpTMZir-bpFdXlNu18Vh35uQMoTKfNLyEXEwpoSMX4tQOv9Ao7w=w240-h320" width="240" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><i>...and her outdoor studio</i><br /></span><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: inherit;">Being a

silence (except for the birds, the whisper of trees, and ocean waves) and no
visual distractions.</span></span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span>So definitely no
clutter, just a lot of space. </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span>I only

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large; line-height: 115%;">I’m not
really a gadget person. I have a simple straight stitch sewing machine and the
tools I use can easily fit into one glass jelly jar that includes a seam
ripper, Karen K Buckley perfect scissors, a pair of large scissors, paper
scissors, tweezers, hera tool and "that purple thang" (a sort of stiletto). I have a second glass
jelly jar that includes the tools I need for the sewing machine – brush,
screwdriver, oil, machine needles, pipe cleaner, walking foot and quarter inch
foot. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large; line-height: 115%;">Except for
rotary cutters that are on the portable cutting tables, and a couple of rulers
that I mostly use for trimming up finished quilts, I don’t keep much else. My
goal is to keep the studio and my studio practice as minimal as possible. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large; line-height: 115%;"><b>Going back to your main studio, what does having this workspace mean
for your processes, and how do you make the space work for you?</b></span></i></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">I love my
studio and spend every possible moment I can in it! Having lots of space to
move around, large cutting tables and a huge design wall give me the freedom I
need to translate what’s in my head to fabric. Being a minimalist and staying
organized allows me to be efficient which helps with deadlines! </span><span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large; line-height: 115%;"><b>If you had the chance, what change
would make it your ultimate creative space?</b><o:p></o:p></span></i></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large; line-height: 115%;">Taller
design walls. I tend to work very large – 8 feet<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>by 8 feet.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">

I prepared the cotton for the black dyebath using a shibori technique called itajime, which involves folding the fabric, adding resists and using clamps to hold it all together, thus preventing dye penetration and creating the pattern. </span></i></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Q: What prompted you to choose this particular technique for your series?</span></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><i>Itajime both fascinates and challenges me. I’m drawn to it for several reasons: the “glow” effect of the blurred dye lines, the contrast of order with imperfection, and my inability to control the outcomes. Relinquishing control in this way, I, myself, am unbound. </i></span></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><i>Traditionally, itajime involves only a single dye bath, often indigo or brown, leaving white patterning. I spent a couple of years previously experimenting with a more complex approach, layering colour over colour and pattern over pattern with multiple rounds of folding and dyeing. While I was able to make a few exciting pieces, I was more often disappointed with my results. </i></span></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><i>This current series began as a way to become more skilled at itajime by simplifying my process: making many small studies, using narrow strips and a single colour (+black).
